Fan Care & Storage Guide
How to Keep Your Fan Beautiful for Years
Japanese folding fans are delicate handcrafted artworks, carefully made by skilled artisans. Proper handling and storage preserve not only their beauty, but also their form and longevity.

Proper Handling
Always handle your fan slowly and gently.
Hold the ribs (bamboo frame), not the paper surface.
・Use both hands when opening and closing.
・Open gently from the main ribs, then unfold slowly.
・Close carefully along the folds.
One-handed or fast movements place stress on the structure and may cause damage.
Surface Care
When displayed, a fan naturally gathers dust over time.
Remove dust regularly to prevent damage and staining.
Remove dust using gentle airflow, such as a hand fan or a low-power blower.
Strong air pressure may damage pigments, gold leaf, and the paper surface.
Alternatively, use a soft brush, makeup brush, or art dust brush.
Brush lightly from top to bottom in one direction.
Avoid chemical fibers and microfiber dusters, as they may catch on pigments and gold leaf.
Fanning Practice
Fan slowly and gently.
Fast motion may damage the structure of the fan.
Be mindful when using the fan near others.
Carrying & Protection
Always carry your fan in a cloth pouch.
This protects it from friction and dirt.
Avoid using the fan in rain or damp environments.
Storage & Preservation
Store your fan in a dry, well-ventilated place away from heat and direct sunlight.
Secure the fan with its original paper band to maintain its shape.
Store it in a paper box or a paulownia wood box to protect it from moisture and insects.
If the original paper band is lost or damaged, use plain, unprinted paper only.
Printed paper may transfer ink onto the fan surface.
Plastic containers are not suitable, as they trap moisture and reduce ventilation.
Repair & Maintenance
Broken ribs, torn surfaces, and loosened pivots may be repairable.

Repair fees and shipping costs will be charged additionally.
Repair availability depends on the condition of the fan.
